Wood Moisture Content: Why Furniture Manufacturing Must Control Wood Moisture

Key Points
- Moisture content standard for indoor furniture materials: 8%-12%
- Needle method: ±1% precision but leaves needle holes; non-contact inductive inspection is ideal for finished product sampling.
- The moisture content of furniture exported to North America must be controlled between 6% and 8%, complying with ASTM D4442 standards.
Moisture content (MC) is a critical quality metric in wood processing and furniture manufacturing. Excessive MC can cause warping, cracking, or mold growth, while insufficient MC makes wood brittle and hampers machinability. This article explains the importance of MC testing and guides instrument selection.
Standard Moisture Content Range for Wood
Wood moisture content requirements vary by application:
Indoor Furniture Material: 8%-12%. This is the typical equilibrium moisture content range for most indoor environments, effectively preventing furniture warping.
Floor material: 6%–9%. Flooring requires lower moisture content, as ground dampness can compromise wood stability.
Outdoor material: 12%-15%. Due to significant humidity fluctuations in outdoor environments, moisture content should be slightly increased to enhance weather resistance.
Furniture for the North American market: moisture content must be controlled between 6% and 8%, complying with US ASTM D4442 standards.
Three Working Principles of Moisture Meters
Pin-type moisture meter: Measures wood moisture content by calculating resistance between two metal pins inserted into the wood. High accuracy (±1%), but leaves pinholes on the surface. Ideal for raw material inspection upon receipt.
Inductive Moisture Meter: Uses electromagnetic induction to measure without contacting the wood surface. Non-destructive testing, ideal for spot-checking finished furniture quality. Le Xin Electronic Technology (Baiantu)'s MT-860 Inductive Moisture Meter has a measurement depth of up to 20 mm.
Spherical Moisture Meter: Features a spherical probe for larger contact area and more stable measurements. Ideal for moisture testing on irregular surfaces and curved wood.
Recommended Detection Frequency
Raw Material Inbound: Spot-check 5%-10% of each batch using a needle-type moisture meter.
During production: Conduct a quick screening using an inductive moisture meter every 2 hours.
Final Product Dispatch: 100% inspection using inductive or spherical moisture meters.
Le Xin Electronic Technology offers three series of wood moisture meters—pin-type, induction, and ball-type—covering end-to-end quality control needs from raw materials to finished products.
