EMC Issues and Solutions in PCB Design

Key Points

  • Layout optimization: Separate digital and analog sections; place decoupling capacitors close to IC power pins.
  • Layout Strategy: Impedance Control, Differential Pair Length Matching and Spacing Optimization, Signal Return Path Optimization
  • Grounding Design: Single-point, Multi-point, or Hybrid Grounding with Intact Earth Layers

EMC (Electromagnetic Compatibility) is a critical issue in PCB design that directly impacts product stability and compliance. This article details four key aspects of EMC design.

1. Layout Optimization Separate digital and analog circuits to prevent interference. Route high-speed signals (e.g., clocks, data buses) away from sensitive analog areas. Place decoupling capacitors as close as possible to IC power pins.

For multilayer boards, place the power and ground planes adjacent to each other to create a natural decoupling capacitance. Position the crystal oscillator close to its corresponding IC and maintain an intact ground plane beneath it.

2. Routing Strategy High-speed signal traces should use controlled impedance and avoid right-angle turns; use 45-degree angles or curved transitions instead. Differential pairs must be routed with equal length, consistent spacing, and tight coupling.

Keep the signal return path as short and continuous as possible. Avoid routing signal traces across split planes; if crossing is necessary, add stitching capacitors at the boundary.

3. Grounding Design Select single-point, multi-point, or hybrid grounding strategies based on signal frequency. Single-point grounding is suitable for low-frequency circuits, while multi-point grounding is appropriate for high-frequency circuits.

Keep the substrate intact to avoid large-scale drilling. For mixed-signal circuits, connect digital and analog grounds at a single point to prevent ground loops.

4. Filtering and Shielding Add filtering circuits (LC or π-type) at power inputs and I/O interfaces. For radiation-sensitive circuits, use shielded enclosures or conductive coatings.
